Lady Braves fall to No. 3 Lady Jackets, 4-0

Atlanta, GA—Georgia Tech outlasted Alcorn State, 4-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Tennis Tourney. The Jackets got things moving quickly as they won the point in the doubles competition. The Lady Braves attempted to dig themselves of the hole during singles but Georgia Tech’s tenacity overtook Alcorn State. Georgia Tech earned their second point after Felicia Chien was defeated by Noelle Hickey. After gaining their second point it wasn’t long before the defending national champs had sealed their fate to move on to the next round.

“Our team played extremely well,” stated Coach Dodgen. All of the coaches were upbeat and had many positive things to say about the ladies. “They made Georgia Tech play really hard. I am very proud of their performance.” Read the rest

Lady Tigers Improve on First Day Scores

ATHENS, Ga. - Windy conditions at the University of Georgia Golf Course did not help Jackson State, or many other teams, at the NCAA East Regional Friday. While the Lady Tigers again languished at the bottom of standings in the 21-team field, several individuals were able to play better during the second day of the tournament.

Larry Smith selected as Head Men’s Basketball Coach

Vicksburg, MS — Athletic Director, Dr. Darren J. Hamilton introduced Larry Smith as the new head Men’s Basketball coach today. Thunderous applause rang throughout the room when Smith took his place behind the podium to address the audience. Smith said, “It feels good to come back home.” Dubbed the nickname Mr. Mean for his rebounding style, he also stated “his number one priority would be recruiting, because there are good players out there. ASU Issues Statement on NCAA Notice of Allegations

Montgomery, Ala. - The NCAA has issued Alabama State University a notice of allegations that contains 24 possible NCAA rules violations and nine requests for additional documents/information.

The NCAA document describes one or more incidents or occurrences of potential NCAA rules violations per alleged infraction.

University officials are reviewing the notice of allegations to determine if the alleged infractions are credible. The University will respond to the notice of allegations by June 27, 2008.

A notice of allegations is one of many steps in the NCAA enforcement process. University officials look forward to completing the final step, the hearing before the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions, in August. The Committee on Infractions will determine whether the notice of allegations against the University and the named parties is correct. Read the rest

Player of the Week

Frazier Hall, Southern University
(1B/DH/C, 6-3, 225, Fr., Baton Rouge, La.)
Hall went 8-for-15 from the plate in four games last week. He posted four doubles, seven runs, fi ve RBIs and a home run for the Jaguars. In the Jaguars’ 9-3 win over the Panthers,  Hall was 3-for-4 (three doubles) with one run and a RBI. He was 2-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs and a home run in the Jaguars’ 15-6 win over Prairie View A&M.

Pitcher of the Week

Sherrod Brooks, Southern University
(RHP, 5-10, 185, Jr., Texarkana, Ark.)
Brooks struck out eight batters in six innings in Southern’s 15-6 victory over the Panthers. He allowed three earned runs and eight hits. He has a 6-1 record on the season and is 4-0 in conference play.

2008 SWAC Baseball Tournament begins May 14

The Southwestern Athletic Conference will host its 2008 Baseball Tournament at Lee-Hines Field on the campus of Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. There is a new format this year as the top four teams from the Eastern Division along with the top four teams from the Western Division will participate in the five-day event. It is a double-elimination tournament with the exception of the championship game.

First round competition begins Wednesday, May 14 with the championship set for Sunday, May 18. The championship game will be televised live on ESPNU at 1:00 p.m. Read the rest

TSU Tigerbelles Claim 2008 OVC Outdoor Track Title

tnstatelogo.gifThe Tennessee State Tigerbelles surged from a fourth place first-day 30.50 points to overwhelm the field, finishing with 164.50 points to win the 2008 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field title Saturday (5/03) at Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, MO. The Tigerbelles won their third outdoor title, adding this title to their Indoor Championship in 2008.

On the women’s side, Samford finished second with 118.50 points followed by Eastern Illinois (111.50), Southeast Missouri (95), Murray State (70.50), Austin Peay (63.50), Jacksonville State (63.50), Tennessee Tech (31), Eastern Kentucky (21) and Morehead State (1).

SWAC Football Kickoff Luncheon set for July 22

swac.gifThe Southwestern Athletic Conference will hold its annual Kickoff Luncheon & Media Day on Tuesday, July 22, 2007. The media activities will be held at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame while the luncheon will take place at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex in downtown Birmingham.

The media day activities will begin at 9 am with interview sessions from the head coaches and student athletes from all ten conference institutions. Following the interview sessions, the kickoff luncheon will begin at 11 am with remarks from the Conference Office and the announcement of the preseason honors and predicted order of finish. Up-to-date news and information will be available for the nationally televised MEAC-SWAC Football Challenge on August 31 between Jackson State University and Hampton University.
