View Full Version : Houston Voted Top City To Live In

HOUSTON, 2:20 p.m. CDT June 5, 2001 - Black Enterprise magazine conducted a survey earlier in the year and concluded that Houston is the No. 1 city for African-Americans to live in.

The magazine, which hit newsstands Tuesday, announced that of all the major U.S. cities, Houston was best overall.

New York and Los Angeles, the most populous cities in America, didn't even crack the top 10.

Houston beat out New York, L.A. and Chicago as the No. 1 place to live, work and play for African-Americans.

"It welcomes all newcomers," Mayor Lee P. Brown said at a news conference. "For Houston, it is not where you came from, it is what you bring to the table."

Brown credited Houston's diverse communities and can-do attitudes.

The magazine surveyed 4,100 people and covered 21 quality-of-life issues, including income, earnings potential, cost of living, how close they were to their employer and cost of housing.

"People are really making decisions in their life based on quality of life much more so than they did in the past," Earl Graves, president of Black Enterprise magazine, said.

A sample of opinions outside the courthouse downtown by News2Houston showed that African-Americans generally agreed with the magazine's ranking, except for one attorney.

"As an attorney and just dealing with all different types of people, it is just really hard for me to believe that," attorney Chawn Hubbard said.

The ranking is a feather in the cap of the Brown administration, and an important tool for Houston's tourism business.

The human resources director for Houston-based Compaq also said that the ranking is a "great, great recruitment tool."

That is interesting. I do not know about Charlotte. But consider that Houston is not a majority Black city. Compare or contrast that to Atlanta, Memphis, and Washington.

I heard that on the news on Channel 13 with Gina Gaston reporting. It is nice to have Gina back in town.

Houston has so much to offer. A beautiful skyline, #100 ranking for air pollution, humidity that is bearable, the best transit system (that consists of "the Metro" that always gets you anywhere on time), every single freeway is under construction in planning for the future, liquor stores close at 9, two great sports teams and one team that will not suck when they start play (WNBA is good too), the more I think about it the best thing about Houston it is in Texas and there isn't a State Income Tax. I guess I will stay here the rest of my life :D ;) :) :p

Here's the July cover of BE. The cover shows Houston's Mayor Lee Brown (who I had the honor to introduce at our Alumni Scholarship Banquet last month) and Pastor Kirby John Caldwell as well as one of Texas Southern's very own (Janell Ellison) who works for NASA as a Verifictions Analyst and is our National Alumni Vice President for Membership.

Pick up this months edition if you don't already subscribe to the magazine.

Mighty Hairnet! You still have not answered the lady's question. Where do you live? Are you ashamed to say?

Undoubtedly, the fine quality education available for blacks in the city had something to do with its selection.

I only drove through Houston on my way to Galveston and I fell in love with it. As a matter of fact, Houston is tops on my list of places to move to. Atlanta was number one until I decided to go to Kappa Beach this past April. Memphis is too close to home for me.
I guess you can call me a "future Houston transplant." I'll probably be there in a year and a half or so.

Yooouuu Knooowww Whatt can I saaayyyy?:D
The newest issue of B.E. was waiting in my mailbox when I made it to the house yesterday. I was happy to see Houston topped the lists in many of the categories used to select the #1 city for us. For an example Houston was tops in affordable housing and for a positive urban environment, but I could have told you that.

Also, kudos to sitsa Janell Ellison, she gives love and props to TSU twice in her commentary.
That's great exposure for the
Tto the Sto the U.
"I hope the administration capitalizes on it"

There are also several other good articles in this month's issue.
Get your B.E. I got mine!

By the way Mighty Hairnet, I'm still waiting. Where do you keep the hair from falling in the fries?

If you think most people that are here in Houston are from some where else and decided to settle here because its a great place to live. Yeah we only get two season here ( hot and not so hot) but its a great place.

SMH @ that statement.

Tropical storms are not even the norm. Other than a couple days ago, when was the last time Houston has really had to deal with the weather? Like someone said, it's either hot or not so hot. I'd rather have a couple of rain storms than earthquakes, tornadoes, blizzards, or what ever else mother nature can throw at you.

Houston sports will be off the chain, once again, as soon as these Texans get going. We got the Astros (doing well again), Comets (4-time Champ.), Rockets (back to back champs...and looking forward to the next wit Steve Francis), Areos:rolleyes: (they did win a championship though, :D) And, aren't we getting an Olympic bid?

Houston's landscaping and freeways will be on point in about a year to a year and a half. The neiborhoods are being built fast, and are all beautiful.

As a die hard Houstonian...I don't see how you can doubt the "H". Im a bit suprised, but then again, I understand the #1 rating.

One time fo' Missouri City.
