Houston, Texas – Candy Robinson announced today that he is stepping down as head coach of the Texas Southern University baseball program. He will now serve as the Director of Baseball Operations.
“I have been thinking about this for two years,” said Coach Robinson. “I believe the timing was right. We won the championship and my daughter will soon graduate from high school. So this gives me an opportunity to spend more time with my family while still contributing to a baseball program I helped to build.”
“I believe this move sets Texas Southern’s baseball program on a course towards national contention,” said TSU athletics director Charles McClelland. “Coach Robinson’s knowledge and contacts in baseball are unparalleled. His resources will undoubtedly help propel the program into one of the nation’s best.” Read the rest »

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas- PVAMU Assistant Baseball Coach Waskyla Cullivan has been named interim head baseball coach following the resignation of former head coach Michael Robertson. The change is effective June 23, 2008.
Robertson concludes his career as the Panthers head coach with a 163-170 overall record. During his tenure, he led Prairie View A&M to their first Southwestern Athletic Conference championship in school history and back-to-back SWAC titles (2006, 2007). Overall, Prairie View A&M made four consecutive appearances in the SWAC’s title game, finishing as the conference’s runner-up in 2005 and 2008.
“Prairie View A&M University and the Athletics department is extremely thankful for the contributions Michael Robertson has made to our program over the past six seasons,” said Interim Athletics Director Fred Washington. “Our baseball program has enjoyed a lot of success under his direction and we’re excited about the opportunity to build upon those successes with Coach Cullivan at the helm of our program this year.” Read the rest »

Itta Bena, Miss.—Funeral services has been set for Charles “Chuck” Prophet, 67, former athletic director at Mississippi Valley State University, who died last Friday, June 20, 2008, at Greenwood ]-LeFlore Hospital.
Services have been set for Saturday June 28th at 11 a.m. in the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex on the MVSU campus. Visitation is set for 3 p.m.-7 p.m. Friday at Century Funeral Home, 801 Walthall St. in Greenwood, MS. Family hour will began at 6 p.m.

Itta Bena, Miss. — The Mississippi Valley State University family mourns the death of former Athletic Director and Sports Information Director Charles “Chuck” Prophet. Prophet, 67, passed around midday today in the Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Greenwood, Miss.
A pioneer in the field of athletics administration, Prophet, was widely known as “The Wagon Master” of the famed SWAC football press tours. In 2005 he was honored when the football field at Rice-Totten Stadium was renamed Charles “Chuck” Prophet Field and in 2006 was enshrined into the Mississippi Valley State University Athletics Hall of Fame.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference Sports Information Directors Group recently named Kevin Manns of Southern University the 2007-08 SWAC SID of the Year. The award is given annually to the sports information person during the Conference’s Spring Meetings.
Kevin Manns is in his eighth season on “The Bluff” as sports information director at Southern University. As the director, Manns’s office is responsible for the dissemination of information concerning Southern University athletics, which serves as the curator of the University’s athletic records and as the liaison between the department, various media entities, professional athletic organizations, among other responsibilities.

Former Tennessee State University golfer, Robert Dinwiddie, has made the cut at the 2008 US Open Golf Tournament in Torrey Pines, CA.
Dinwiddie recorded scores of 73 and 71 for a even par 144 in the tournament’s first two days. This is his first-time playing in the US Open.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference announces its 2008 football schedule highlighted by classics, traditional rivalries and televised contests.
In addition to the schedule, the Conference has revised its tiebreaker policy. As football will be moving to a seven-game conference mandate, the SWAC Council of Presidents approved a new divisional tiebreaker to decide the participants in the SWAC Championship Football Game. The new system will be in effect for the 2008 season and focuses on a team’s play during divisional action.
